Two Kazakh films were awarded prizes at the Gatchina Film Festival

ASTANA. KAZINFORM – On September 20, Gatchina hosted the awards ceremony and the closing of the Literature and Cinema international film festival, an annual and one-of-a-kind screen adaptation competition. Two films of Kazakhfilm JSC received awards, Kazinform reports with reference to the press service of the film studio.

The special diploma of the international jury for the best work of production designer Yermek Utegenov was awarded to the film “Mukagali” (directed by Bolat Kalymbetov).

The prize for the best script was given to the film “Akyn” directed by Darezhan Omirbayev.

Recall that the artistic picture dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the famous Kazakh poet Mukagali Makatayev tells the audience about the last years of his life.

The film Mukagali won the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the 25th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF). This is the first prestigious award in the history of Kazakh cinema received in Estonia. In early August, the film Mukagali opened the Days of Kazakh Cinema in Kyrgyzstan. This year, the Days of Kazakh Cinema are planned to be held in 15 foreign countries.

The world premiere of the film “Akyn” took place at the Tokyo Film Festival, where the jury was deeply impressed by the Kazakhstani film and awarded Darezhan Omirbayev the prize “Best Director”.

The film “Akyn” raises the question of the role of art in the society of modern technologies and mass consumption and tells about the experiences of the poet. Reflecting on the tragic fate of the 19th-century rebel poet Makhambet Utemisov, the viewer is deeply shocked, realizing how difficult and fragile the life of the poet has always been.

The competition program of the film festival in Gatchina this year included 35 films – works by professional authors and debutants. Both major well-known studios and independent authors from different countries: Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Israel, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan submitted their paintings to the competition.

It should be noted that the first Russian Film Festival “Literature and Cinema” was held in Gatchina in 1995. Since then, for more than 20 years, it has annually presented novelties of Russian and world cinema. This is the only festival in which only film adaptations with a literary basis participate. Not only filmmakers take part in the work of the film festival, but also writers representing the golden fund of modern culture.
