The list of Russian films, from which the nominee for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Oscar will be selected in the coming months, includes 122 films. This became known on Friday, September 23.

The Russian Oscar Committee, led by Pavel Chukhrai, must nominate a film from the country that could qualify for the award in the Best Foreign Language Film nomination. However, filmmakers’ opinions were divided. Directors Alexey Uchitel and Andrei Konchalovsky believe that Russia should nominate the film for an Oscar, despite the political situation, informs TASS. The chairman of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation, Nikita Mikhalkov, in turn, is sure that it makes no sense to do this.

The list of potential applicants includes films that participated or will participate in commercial distribution from January 1 to November 30, 2022. Among them are “1941. Wings over Berlin” by Konstantin Buslov, “My dad is the leader” by Yegor Konchalovsky, “One” by Dmitry Suvorov.

Nominations for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film are made by countries themselves. After that, the nominees are selected. Domestic films were laureates in this category three times: “War and Peace” by Sergei Bondarchuk, “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” by Vladimir Menshov and “Burnt by the Sun” by Nikita Mikhalkov.

The 95th Academy Awards will take place in March 2023.
