In the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, as well as in the territories controlled by the Russian military Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, voting began in referendums on joining the Russian Federation.
Residents of Zaporozhye and the Kherson region will have to answer the question: “Do you support secession from Ukraine, the formation of the region as an independent state and joining Russia?” In the DPR and LPR, the question put to the vote is: “Are you in favor of joining Russia as a subject of the Federation?”
Voting in all regions will last until Tuesday, September 27th.
It is noted that residents of these regions who are in Russia can also vote. Polling stations were the first to open in the Jewish Autonomous Region (JAO), Kamchatka and Sakhalin.
The chairman of the Central Election Commission of the DPR, Vladimir Vysotsky, informed on the eve of the full readiness for holding a referendum on the republic’s entry into the Russian Federation, RIA Novosti reports. “The readiness of our electoral system is 100%,” Vysotsky said. According to him, the lists of voters are filled, more than 1.5 million ballots have been printed.
The head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, in his video message published on the Telegram channel, noted that the region had been “waiting for this moment” for more than eight years. “The holding of the referendum is a historic milestone. Not only because we are sure of a positive result, but because this is the culmination of our common difficult path,” he said.
The CEC of the LPR said that, for security reasons, the election commissions began to work outside the premises of the polling stations, writes Interfax. From September 23 to September 26, voting will be carried out by bypassing the adjoining territories, public spaces and other places suitable for voting by the employees of the election commissions; On September 27, residents of the LNR will be able to vote directly at the polling stations.
“The Republic is 100% ready to hold a referendum. Based on the fact that the majority of the inhabitants of the republic have been waiting for this moment for many years, we predict a high turnout at the vote,” the commission stressed.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree recognizing the DPR and LPR on February 21, 2022; On February 24, in response to the appeal of the republics for help, the launch of a special military operation to “demilitarize and denazify Ukraine” was announced.
