Marcelo Ebrard begins meeting with Russian Foreign Minister to discuss peace proposal

The chancellor Marcelo Ebrard is currently meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergei V. Lavrovto discuss the president’s proposal Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to end Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

The meeting is held within the framework of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly and after the meeting that Foreign Minister Ebrard held yesterday with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Kuleba.

The head of Mexican diplomacy promotes a peacemaking proposal that seeks the creation of a delegation made up of the UN Secretary General, Anthony Guterresthe Pope Francisco and the Prime Minister of India, Narenda Modri; as well as a five-year truce and the commitment of both nations not to participate in any other armed conflict during that time or to use nuclear weapons.

The proposal was presented yesterday, Thursday, by Foreign Minister Ebrard before the Security Council and the plenary session of the General Assembly, where he said that Mexico recognizes Guterres’ leadership in the search for solutions to the conflict and that, in order to “strengthen its mediation efforts,” proposed the “formation of a committee for the dialogue and peace in Ukraine, with the participation of other heads of state and government, including if possible His Excellency Narendra Modi (Prime Minister of India) and His Holiness Pope Francis.”

“The objective,” he added, “would be to generate new mechanisms for dialogue and complementary spaces for mediation, which foster trust, reduce tensions and open the way towards a lasting peacea.”

“It is time to act,” he said. “Resigning oneself to war is always going to a precipice.”
