The European Union has banned bilateral meetings with representatives of Russia. In this regard, the meeting of the President of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiades with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov was canceled. This was stated by the official representative of the government of Cyprus Marios Pelecanos on Thursday, September 22.

According to him, an extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers was held in New York the day before. It was also attended by Foreign Minister of Cyprus Ioannis Kasoulides. “EU guidelines have been put in place to avoid bilateral meetings with Russia. Therefore … we have gone to the cancellation of a pre-planned meeting with Mr. Lavrov,” Pelecanos said. He stated that Cyprus will support all decisions of the European Union, informs RIA News.

“We must move together, resolutely and prudently, together with our European partners,” the Cypriot government spokesman added.
