Belarus expects to get membership in the SCO in a year

MINSK. BELTA – KAZINFORM – Belarus expects to get membership in the SCO in a year. This was stated by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko during a conversation with journalists in the state memorial complex “Khatyn”, Kazinform reports with reference to BELTA.

“Everyone went through this path (the procedure for admission to SCO membership. – approx. BelTA), with the exception of the founders. The next meeting is in India, and I have set a task for all government bodies and the Foreign Ministry, first of all, to complete this path in a year (an organization will not meet earlier),” Alexander Lukashenko said.

According to the regulation on the admission of new members to the SCO, the applicant state must accede to the international treaties in force in the organization (there are about 40 of them), and make the necessary changes to national legislation. For example, it took Iran more than a year and a half. “He went the same way that we have to go,” the President noted. We’ll do it in a year. And as soon as we accept everything that has been developed there, they will collect all this information in Delhi – on the table of the heads of state. They make a decision, as they did with Iran. Yes, we become members. This path must be taken by all.”

As previously reported, Alexander Lukashenko took part in the SCO summit on September 15-16. For Belarus, the main result of the meeting of heads of state in Samarkand was the start of the procedure for its admission to the organization. The application of the Belarusian side was supported at the summit unanimously.
